Forgotten Egypt I – Nefayiati

Here, I will share a section of the story with you all… (Of course, you will have to overlook my grammatical mistakes as you all already had!)  :)

Prologue

You can fight the destiny, but it will always found its way back to you, as it was the task you’ve chosen before you were born.

All Nefayiati wanted was to live a normal life like everyone else in Egypt, but it seemed to be an impossible dream to reach as she was everything but ordinary. On top of that, her destiny seemed to keep pulling her into the palace – a place her mother had tried everything to keep her away from, a place where she should belong since the day she was born…

Chapter 1

Thebes, the Capital of Egypt…

Dead silence spread across the market as the calabash landed on the ground. This was the most popular market in Thebes, which located in the east side of town where lower ranking commoners met the upper classes people. This was a place where often filled with noise and shouting between vendors and people, but today was not like every other day; no one dared to make any noise as they could all see how upset Liye was; he was someone that no one dared to challenge before, because he was from the highest class in this neighborhood. It was a clear understanding that no one should ever challenge the upper class, especially to those whose family worked in the palace; and Liye was from one of those family.

Liye now reached his forehead and saw the blood drop on his fingertip, within a second, the anger fumed as he quickly glared back to the girl in front of him who just threw the calabash on his head! Not only she was as dirty as a rag dog, filthy as rat, she was also covered by excess mud on her face like she was trying to cover something; something she would not want anyone to find out. Despite how disgusted he felt by the way she looked, he picked on her because he had never seen her in this neighborhood before, and he wanted her out of this market! In a way, he believed he was the lord of this neighbourhood, since no one could place stand in this market without going through him! And this girl… he grunted; this low class filthy rat! Not only she had shown no respect to him, she was ignorant enough to throw calabash on him when she wasn’t even allowed to be in this market!

SLAP-

Before anyone could react anything further, Liye had already swung his palm on Nefayiati’s face, threw her whole body harshly into the wall behind her!

Within a split second, the pain penetrated her back, the blood rushed up to the corner of her mouth! But she had no time to respond to the pain when Liye already grabbed her by neck and pulled her up from the ground. He nailed her against the wall, with the glare in his eyes that he was determined to kill her in this very moment!

“You asked for this —” He hissed through clenched teeth “You shall die for your ignorance—”

“ENOUGH!”

Before Liye could tighten his fingers and ended this girl’s life, a loud voice broke through the silence and froze everything in motion! Liye turned his head to see who was bold enough to ever stop him, but quickly loosened his grip as he saw Jared walking toward him from the other end of the market.

Jared, was the royal guard to the queen – Royal guards in Thebes were often the best soldiers, selected from the best of the best in order to protect the Royals! Normally they had years of experience in battle; there had never been anyone chosen without any previous training! But somehow, Jared was selected to be royal guard of the queen as soon as he was sent into the Palace. 15 year old Jared was quite a tall, handsome young man. His dark wheat colored skin reflected the light of the sun, and his features were quite unique; he had a tint of brown to his skin and a look very different from the typical Egyptians, on top of that, the queen favored him, and that was exactly what gave him power that no one dare to defeat.

“Jared,” Liye quickly turned to him, as Nefayiati dropped to the ground “…you don’t have to get involved in this!”

“I don’t?” Jared raised one of his eyebrows as he quickly checked the girl on the ground, making sure she was still breathing with the corner of his eye. But his gaze swiftly turned toward Liye and locked on his face, this time, with firm tone and continued “I do not know you’ve crowned to be the pharaoh as you are now executing the life of his people? Since when, Egypt is now running under your rules?”

Liye’s face redden as he knew clearly what the consequence would be if he was ever caught to execute the rules of pharaoh! But what would he care? He grunted; it had been clear understanding that upper class people always had the right of the lower class’s life! “She is just a rag!” Liye justified “What would you care what I do to her? She meant nothing to the people like us—”

“A life.” Jared corrected “She might mean nothing to you, but it’s for the king to decide whether her life should end or not! I shall believe the queen would love to hear there are people like you, playing their role as the lord of all people!”

“You—” Liye clenched fist as his fury grew. No matter how he felt toward Jared, he knew he should never challenge Jared’s power as he was the guard to the queen, and he, in the other hand, even though his father had worked in the palace for years, he had never stepped foot into the palace before! So he softened the aggressiveness in his tone and continued “We shall not ruin our class over a slave.”

“And I shall report your act to the queen myself, or…” Jared continued “you would like to go to the queen with me, and explain it yourself?”

Liye bit down his lip, although the pharaoh should be the ruler of the kingdom, he knew too well that the queen was the one who decided things for the king! He often heard it over his father that the queen was the woman without a heart! She could kill any one without a blink! Just then, a chill rushed through his spine as Jared suggested bringing him to the queen… Liye thought; seeing queen is definitely something he would never want to happen as long as he lives!

“No. Save the trip.” He declined. Knowing what Jared was expecting out of him, he glared to that girl on the ground and stated “I would leave her alone since she is now under your claim.” He then spit on the girl to despise her filthiness, and led the group of his followers out of the market with annoyance. He thought to himself; it would never be worthy to risk his life with Jared over a girl like that!

Jared softened his expression after making sure Liye and his people completely left the market, out of his sight! He then kneeled down and checked the girl on the ground, making sure she was okay and unharmed. This was when he realized this girl was not only dirty, but it almost felt like she was trying really hard to hide something, something he couldn’t quite figure out; she covered herself with mud and dirt from head to toe, with a rag clothes that smelled and patches all over…

Dirty, he noted; almost not enough to describe her. He then saw the blood by the corner of her lips, but he couldn’t see any sadness or tear in her eyes. He was surprised to realize that; even though she was so close to death, there was no fear in her eyes! Instead, anger or frustration, an expression that shouldn’t been seen on a thirteen year old girl like her…

“Are you okay?” He finally asked.

As he reached his hand, trying to wipe off the blood by her lip, Nefayiati ruthlessly brushed his hand off her like he was one of Liye’s kinds. She then quickly pushed herself off the ground, picking all the calabashes from the floor into the cart, and rapidly pushed her cart out of the market. She disappeared so fast that Jared didn’t even have a chance to have a word with her!

Jared frowned lightly and thought; what a girl! Living in Thebes his whole life, he was certain this girl must be new in town, as he had never seen anyone like her before…
